Dr.
Khuloud al-Jamal, MPharm, PhD, Senior Research &
Teaching Fellow in Nanomedicine
She studied Pharmacy at Petra University,
Jordan, graduating in 1998. After working for two years
as a research assistant at Petra University, she joined
The School of Pharmacy to undertake a PhD in drug delivery
under the supervision of Professor Sandy Florence. During
her postgraduate studies she was awarded an Overseas
Research Student (ORS) Scholarship from the University
of London. She spent her pre-registration pharmacy training
year at the University College London Hospitals NHS
Trust in 2005. During her PhD, she synthesized a variety
of dendron and dendrimer molecules and studied their
self-assembly behaviour into vesicular structures so
called “dendrisomes”. The interaction of
these macromolecules with cholesterol, surfactants,
heparin as well as their in vitro and in vivo uptake
was studied. Khuloud is currently working on the transformation
of various delivery systems as angiogenesis inhibitors
for the treatment of solid and metastatic tumors. |

Dr.
Wafa
al-Jamal
Wafa is originally from Palestine, but
has been living in Jordan since 1991. She obtained her Bachelors
degree in Pharmacy with Distinction in February 2003
from Al-Zaytoonah University (Amman, Jordan). After
graduation she spent 8 months working as a community
pharmacist. In October, 2003 she started working as
a teaching assistant for Physical Pharmacy, Microbiology
and Pharmacognosy in Al-Zaytoonah University. Her PhD
studies focus on the development of novel liposome-based
structures for tumor targeting and enhanced intratumoral
delivery. Wafa has been awarded an Overseas Research
Student (ORS) Scholarship from the University of London. |

Ms.
Jennifer Podesta, MPhil/PhD student
Jennifer obtained her BSc (Hons) in
Molecular Biology from the University of Liverpool,
UK. Prior to joining the Nanomedicine Lab in March 2006
to undertake a BBSRC-CASE studentship in collaboration
with AstraZeneca, she worked as a research assistant
at the MRC Prion Unit in the neighbouring Institute
of Neurology. Jennifer also worked at the Institute
of Child Health, UCL and the Department of Molecular
Biology at Princeton University, NJ, USA. Her research
has focused on molecular cell biology, from extracellular
matrix proteins in C. elegans to neuronal development
during embyogenesis and is now translating this to the
development of targeted therapeutics for gene silencing
in cancer. |
Ms.
Hanene Ali-Boucetta, MPhil/PhD student
Hanene obtained a first-class MPharm
(Hons) degree from the School of Pharmacy, University
of London and is originally from Algeria. She is holder
of a full scholarship from the Ministére de l’Enseignement
Supèrieur et de la Recherche Scientifique (Algérie).
Her research focuses on the use of carbon nanotubes
for therapeutic puposes. |
Mr.
Bowen Tian, MPhil/PhD student
Tian has studied Pharmaceutical Sciences
in China. He is reading for his MSc in Drug Delivery
in September 2006. He is spending 6 months in our laboratory
working on nanoparticulate interations using fluorescence
spectrophotometry. |
